788 AD 788 AD - Shankaracharya was born in South India in about 788 CE. He renounced the world at an early age, became a religious teacher and established the Advaita Vedanta (strict monism) school of philosophy, which is based on the Upanishads, Vedanta Sutra (aphorisms on the Upanishads) and the Bhagavad Gita. He travelled all over India expounding Advaita Vedanta, which is a masterpiece of spiritual insight and intellectual subtlety.

1017 AD 1017 AD - Ramanuja was a Vedanta philosopher born in Tamil Nadu in 1017 CE. Although during his youth he studied Advaita Vedanta under the monist teacher Yadava- prakasa, he disagreed with his teacher and went on to propagate Visisthadvaita philosophy. Ramanuja's Visisthadvaita (qualified non-dualism) states that the world and Brahman are united, like a soul and a body. Ramanuja's philosophy differed to Sankara's because he acknowledged the existence of differences.
1336 1336 - He helped the brothers establish the empire sometime in 1336 AD. He later served as a mentor and guide to three generations of kings who ruled over the Vijayanagar empire. Vijayanagara or Hampi, the capital of the empire, has a temple dedicated to this saint. People offer their prayers to this day.
